19th century inventions

In 1852 Elisha Otis invented the fist elevator with safety brakes. This eventually led to taller buildings being built. The first elevator with brakes designed for humans to use (and not freight) was installed in a New York department store. Thanks to Laurie54 for hosting this months Mono Monday
