Seen better days
Scotland trip day 12 Bettyhill.
Boy was it rough in the night high winds and rain, we were woken at 4 30 when the roof window blew open and scared us,(no damage).
We thought another lazy day was on the cards but it brightened up at lunch time so we went for a drive and ended up at Bettyhill, a small village on the North Coast.
It was once heavily populated. The strath formed part of the 1.5 million acre estates of the Countess of Sutherland and her husband, the Marquess of Stafford (later to become the Duke and Duchess of Sutherland), from which 15,000 people were cleared between 1811 and 1821, mostly by the estate factor, Patrick Sellar.
The Countess of Sutherland, in a move unusual for the time, had a resettlement village built near the coast on the east side of the mouth of the River Naver. This she named after herself as Bettyhill.
From here we walked down to Farr beach, beautifully set against the Atlantic Ocean breakers, the doggies had a wonderful time running and chasing each other. the wind was fierce but quite warm when the sun came out.
We walked back up the road and called into The Store Cafe for light refreshments.
We return back to Altnaharra and it looked like it had rained all afternoon…
The extras, beach walk and a round up of some other things we saw on the way.
Tomorrow we hitch up our wagon and travel further North to our next destination, Dunnet Bay.
