Godley Head WWII observation post
Something different for today. I did get above the cloud this morning, and took some shots in soft lighting with fluffy low cloud brushing up against the hillside behind. The blue sky was pale, with a few streaks of high cloud. However, this afternoon we went to Godley Head to see the newly opened track that was damaged in the earthquake. The Department of Conservation is still working in the area, but the new track is high grade, and runs right around the headland past the WWII defences and down into Taylor's Mistake.
This image is of one of the observations posts that were 'manned' by WAACs in the later stages of the war. At the height of the defence activities here there were over 700 people living on the headland, so there are remains of a large number of buildings as well as the gun emplacements. This observation post still has the grass growing on the roof that was intended to camouflage the building from enemy ships.
