Amongst the undergrowth

I imagine there are a lot of things there in the undergrowth and nothing that a good industrial sized metal detector wouldn't sort out.

From time to time my son takes a small metal detector out there but only seems to find old sections of bits of gate or bits of hinges.
How many gates are out there?
And why?
