On 28th September I showed a view over the Gaitero cider factory from the hill above it to the east
Today´s post shows the same factory from the Ría, and because that doesn´t really show it´s scale well enough I´ve posted in extra a view from the hill to the west of the Ría.
Farms along the Ría are called "porrúas". They´re distinctive because they´re subject to regular tidal flooding and any crop has to be salt-resistant and capable of surviving flooding. Apples qualify, and the Gaitero is one of very few porruas that have survived and prospered. Basically the cider industry needed water, apples, and sugar - the latter was imported and delivered by boat down the Ría. The only other major item it needed, apart from bottles and corks, was drinkers, and there were plenty in the area.
