Lunch Stop
We drove north early doors, just a short way to a carpark below Knockan Crag, and set off to ascend Cul Mor. The path for the first couple of miles was a pleasant surprise then we had a boggy, peaty section, then a rocky section. The day was glorious and the views immense with Canisp and Suilven clear of cloud. The higher we climbed the more lochs and lochans came in to view, Assynt is riddled with lochans of all shapes and sizes.
As we reached the final gradient to the summit, the low cloud swirled around us. We arrived at the boulder field promised by the guide book and I took the decision to go no further. Or should I say my knees took the decision. Tony continued onwards and upwards and I retraced my steps to the lochan where we had decided to have lunch. I was surprised to see Tony arrive before I got there and apparently it was no distance at all to the summit from where we had parted.
You can see that swirly low cloud on my blip of our lunch stop. The temperature dropped a fair bit and the breeze picked up so it was a quick sandwich and Tunnocks and we were off on our descent.
Back at the car we drove to Ullapool to stock up on some bits of pieces and then enjoyed cuppas and scones in the Ceilidh Place before returning to the cottage.
Then a bizarre thing occurred. Our cottage is on a dead end single track from the main road with just one cottage after ours. It does, however, have a small carpark for the Dun Canna footpath. We were busy removing our walking boots outside the front door when a car went by and abruptly stopped, it was Colin an orienteering friend who was using up time before the Lewis ferry left by going for a walk! Well, needless to say the walk was aborted and he joined us for a cuppa and catch up! What are the chances of that happening? Two minutes later and we would have been inside and none of us the wiser.
