Pleasant Point Penninsula, Sipayik walking trail

We had a 4 mile walk on a bike and walking trail through the Passamaquoddy Reservation this afternoon.

We were honored by chance to meet Dwayne Tomah, a Tribal  Leader working to restore the lost Passamaquoddy language. Dwayne is the youngest speaker, the rest of the fluent speakers are elders. He is involved in an amazing project to transcribe 130 year old recordings of Tribal stories and songs recorded on wax cylinders in the 1890s. 

We were warmly welcomed to Sipayak and he shared a very emotional story with us. Yesterday, the Passamaquoddy Tribe buried the remains of  their ancestors, some over 6,000 years old. The remains were finally returned by the Peabody Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts at Harvard College.
