Harvest Festival - so different
Time was when Harvest Festival meant offerings of fresh vegetables and fruit which made the church look and smell lovely - freshly dug carrots and potatoes, green vegetables of all kinds, shiny red tomatoes and apples, new laid eggs, home made jams and pickles - and flowers everywhere.
In recent years the amount of fresh food has diminished - but even more so post-covid. We are now asked to bring tins and packets which can be given to the local food bank. The nett result is the same, of course, helping those who are in need!
The harvest hymns are still the same though - even if we have to sing through a mask, and very few farmers now ‘bring in the sheaves’ - the combine does the job in no time!
But we are fortunate to have enough to eat - much of the world is still starving.
