NZ Summer 2024

By AndrewNZ

A big fat queen bee.

It was hive inspection day today and as I'm too busy to take pictures of my hive I took some of a friends bees. The inspection is for disease and is a legal requirement annually by a qualified inspector.
Having my hive open I took the opportunity to put Varroa treatment in place, this is a mite that lives off the bees, mainly drones, while they are developing in a cell and if not controlled will eventually kill the hive.
The queen is just off centre of the picture and a different shape to the others.
I have to decide if I am going to split my hive and go back to two hives or just add a third brood box and leave it at that I have a week or two to make up my mind.
