Truth and Reconciliation Day

6509 children have been unearthed to date, from unmarked mass graves at residential school locations across Canada. The schools ran for approximately 100 years, administered by the church and sanctioned by the government, with attendance made mandatory for every indigenous child. The schools were intentionally built remotely, so that the children could not escape, nor could their parents visit.

This is our legislature here in British Columbia, that has had this installation on its steps since the first mass grave was discovered this past summer. The display is made up of children’s shoes, and toys, representing the original discovery of a single mass grave, which has lead to discovery of more mass graves across the country.
