Slowing down
Autumn is here, no doubt about it. Even if september has been unusually warm, the insects sense the shortening of the day (possible through daylight-sensing of the ocelli? or the turning yellow of the leaves? There are many theories) and nature has equipped them with instinct that makes sure they will not be surprised by the arrival of cold weather. The ones that will overwinter have started to withdraw and prepare for diapause, some will migrate to warmer countries (or just enter your warm homes), those who are destined to die are slowing down due to the cold nights and you will find them motionless and suffering. The number of insects around are significantly lower compared to just a week ago but the ones that are still there are more collaborative with the photographer, like this italian tree cricket that was warming in the sun hanging upside down on a sticklewort that looks as if it has been drizzled with powdered sugar. His pseudopupils followed me, but he made no attempt to escape.
