Chatsworth
Today we drove the short distance from Bakewell to Chatsworth, and spent a good six hours exploring the fabulous house and grounds that are owned by the Cavendish family and which are the seat of the Duke of Devonshire. My blip shows the famous Grand Cascade, installed in the 1696 and designed by M. Grillet, a French hydraulics engineer with experience in decorative water features for Louis XIV of France. The cascade was then remodelled and extended, a few years later.
The Grounds are very impressive, and include a rock garden, huge kitchen garden, maze, arboretum, glass houses, and yet more water features, including fountains and a 287 m long Canal Pond.
As well as amazing antique art works throughout the House, the current Duke and Duchess have a substantial collection of modern paintings, sculptures and ceramics on display,
Chatsworth is definitely the stateliest of stately homes.
