Wherefore Art Thou .... ?
On This Day In History
1957: The Little Rock Nine begin their first day of classes
Quote Of The Day
"It'll be a sad day for this country if children can safely attend their classes only under the protection of armed guards."
(President Dwight David Eisenhower)
It's coming, Dwight. It's coming. Those armed guards will be called "teachers," most likely.
I went to a couple of art galleries this afternoon. The main painting and the extra were from the Haunted Museum exhibition of paintings by Yokoo Tadanori exploring things that are invisible or that cannot be explained by science, a frequent theme in the artist's work. Many of the paintings are from his illustrations for The Complete Works Of Edogawa Rampo, a Japanese author of murder mysteries who derives his name from one of the great masters of the genre; I think you can work out who. The main painting and the first extra deserve close inspection; if you zoom in, you will see why.
A splendidly cheesy touch was the way in which the art was displayed. It was like a haunted house. Some of the paintings were exhibited on the walls of pitch black corridors and you wouldn't see them until you turned a corridor and then they would suddenly be lit up with an accompanying faux blood curdling scream. The sounds of groans, agonised moans, sinister laughter and rumbling earthquakes also accompany you as you walk around the gallery. Great stuff. (I scoff, but I was genuinely shocked when the lift doors opened to reveal the walls splattered with blood. Nice touch.)
