Hogarth's Revenge ....
After yesterday's stark cold blip, I wanted a warm blip for today. We were in The Wilkes Head at lunchtime with this lovely roaring fire, once again using our trusty Taste Card.
The Wilkes Head was the winner of the West Sussex Camra Pub of the Year 2012 and 2013, and is warm and welcoming. The name is said to come from the political reformer John Wilkes who championed the cause of the common people. He was held in the Tower for his criticism of the King and government, but eventually was elected Lord Mayor of London in 1774. He also had a reputation as a bit of a libertine, though was said to be the ugliest man in England in his day. There is an engraving of him, looking particularly demonic , by Hogarth, and carrying a book in which he attacked, amongst others, Hogarth himself. Hogarth's revenge I think ....
