Flooring Work
For a long time we've been ashamed of the state of the floor of our inner porch: I varnished the bare floorboards about 30 years ago but the varnish had long worn off and they'd got very scruffy.
Whilst I'm a keen DIYer I decided that this was a job for an expert so today we had a joiner round to lay a plywood base over the boards and then install "click vinyl" flooring, which we're assured is hard wearing and will be much easier to keep clean. Of course as it's an almost-120-year-old house he discovered that the floor wasn't quite perfectly level (I guess that happens in new houses too of course!) which meant that with the floor being raised a bit, the door had to come off to be shortened a little (the clearance was fine in places but not in others). As the joiner was on his own, and the door very heavy, it's just as well I was around to help him to lift it as my Editor wouldn't have managed.
(The box over the cables on the left isn't new - my Dad made it for us years ago, but I took it off for the work to be done then it needed a little trimmed off the bottom to fit properly again.)
Anyway here are before-and-after shots (I forgot to take the "before" shots as I'd planned, but happily my Editor had sneaked along and taken one on her phone, so this is a combined effort - I took the "after" shot). The woodwork is very overdue a lick of paint and a new doormat is in order but we're very pleased with the lovely job he's done.
