The key to the door

Yesterday friend S and l did a spot of Marsh church visiting. There are 14 of these old churches altogether, all built around the 1200s. We visited 4 different ones, all in rather isolated places on the Romney Marshes or nearby reflecting changes in population over the centuries.
Internally the churches are quite simple but with some similar features; painted pew boxes rather than lines of chairs or pews, no pictures on the walls - instead boards with messages from the scriptures, exposed wooden ceilings and double tiered pulpit boxes.
There were reasons for these features, the congregations were poor and any wood available was used for seating, it was painted to cover the 'humbleness' of the wood. The message boards on the wall rather pictures was a political statement to do with the Ludites and John Wickham although l doubt most of the congregation could read.

The door and key in the main photo are from Saint Thomas Becket church in Fairfield, that key is about 18cm and is quite weighty.
The extra is from St Augustine church in the tiny village of Brookland.
