‘Craigleith for Blackhall’

Up early to take the car for its annual service and MOT today to our little local garage next to the Gallery of Modern Art. 

Had decided to take this opportunity to run the long way back along the North Edinburgh cycle paths. Surprisingly quiet and sheltered from the wind much of the way, it was great to get back to running somewhere I hadn’t been for some time; the sun even came out a bit! 

The photo was taken just before the bridge at Queensferry Road and the platform on the right is all that remains of what was the local station. 

According to Wikipedia, the station (Craigleith) opened in 1879, mainly to serve the Quarry there (its name was changed to Craigleith for Blackhall in the 1920s to reflect the growth of the city’s western commuter belt), and closed in the early 1960s. 

Passing this spot brought back memories - I remember taking the train from Granton Road Station to Newington Station as a schoolboy around that time. Craigleith was on the route  - so I must have passed this spot on the train then!
