Common Enchantments

At the lake

We had an unexpected day today that ended with these beams of sunshine coming through some rain clouds as we crossed the dam at the lake.

Yesterday evening the hubby’s cousin Lyle called to ask if it was possible for us to come to Mt Airy, North Carolina today to pick him up as he had been involved in an accident while towing a car home that he had just purchased. He was fine, just very sore. His truck was not drivable. The car he was towing was a 57 Chevrolet Belair. Lyle buys and restores old cars.

So we left home at 7am to drive the 4 hours, picked him up at a hotel, then get the car. Mt Airy is famous for its annual Mayberry Festival of Mayberry TV show fame. He told us he called the Mayberry taxi to pick him up at the hospital to get to the hotel. I asked him if Deputy Barney or Sheriff Andy had come to his rescue! Not!

Anyway, the car and trailer were actually in Virginia but it was only a few miles further. We got to see his truck which might be fixable..thank goodness he had a big heavy truck. The airbags all went off. He said that Onstar was immediately coming through the speaker and talking with him. Good thing he had it. Another traveler was able to pull over and get back to him to make sure he was okay. There was another vehicle with two younger people who spun around in the road but ending up on the shoulder opposite him. He said they were okay as he saw them at the hospital. He also said that three tractor trailers had a pile up trying to avoid the spinning car.

The reason for the wreckage. A tractor trailer apparently did not see the little car and cut in front of it forcing it to slam on brakes which caused it to spin. Behind this car, Lyle cut left to avoid the car as it was spinning which put him in the median. This was on a long hill, in the rain. He was upright but had hit a big concrete barrier.

The truck that caused the problem went on down the hill with no one able to get a license number though several saw what happened.

We are grateful he was not seriously injured.

He promised to take us for a ride in the 57 Chevy when it gets restored! He said it might take a year.

We got home at 4:30.
