Sunderland Point
No where near Sunderland.
A remote spit of land poking out into the sea alongside the River Lune estuary south of Lancaster. Once a port of departure for slavers doing the triangular passage, arms and metal goods to West Africa, slaves to the West Indies and sugar and tobacco back to Lancaster. All made redundant when the steam tug came along and Glasson dock opened. In Victorian times it had two hotels and a lively trade in middle class sea bathers. Now a tiny hamlet, cut off twice a day by the high tide and one feels it has a great sense of community. Isolation has its price though, a three bed end of terrace with flood defence barriers is on the market at £350k. It does have 64 Mb broadband though and a terrific view.
