Went to The Image Deconstructed Workshop (http://www.imagedeconstructed.com) this weekend. It was amazing. So many amazing photographers and editors came to speak.
Today we had an exercise during lunch where we had to go approach 3 people that we normally wouldn't and talk to them. And get them to tell us something about themselves that they normally wouldn't tell someone.
So I was wandering around aimlessly when this man came walking by. I was real awkward and was all like "hi. I want to talk to you."
And he said sure, and asked how I was. Then I asked him how he was and he said, "I was actually just thinking about that. Not so good."
Me: "Rough day? Rough week?"
Him: "Rough life."
Whoa. Talk about a start to a conversation. Turns out he is homeless and dealing with a lot of stuff in his life at the moment. He said he goes days without anyone talking to him sometimes. It broke my heart.
He dropped some wisdom bombs on me though about life.
For example, he told me that every day he just tries to get up and do something that he didn't do the day before.
I think that's beautiful.
Everyone should go talk to strangers. They all have really interesting stories. You just gotta ask.
