Machrie Moor Stone Circles

We took the coastal route south to Machrie Moor (just squeezed in to the last space in the small car park) where we had a walk to the 4000 year old stone circles, burial cairns and standing stones. The weather improved and it was hot walking up to the moor. There was a good path round the various circles and stones. A ruined farm added to the atmosphere.

Then we drove to a car park for another walk to Kings Caves. The Victorians put it about that Robert the Bruce hid there, (makes a change from Bonnie Prince Charlie) but there’s no evidence. The walk was through woods then along the shore to a series of caves, some quite large. From the path back we got a good view of The Doon, an interesting rock formation.

We returned by a much better road, the String, across the hills from Blackwaterfoot to Brodick. We stopped at a viewpoint but Goatfell summit was still in cloud.

19000 steps, 7.5 miles. Another great day. Now I have to cook up some pasta.
