Lunna House

On our way to the ferries north we took a diversion to Lunna. This was the location chosen to base the 'Shetland Bus', an operation to sail between Shetland and Norway carrying materials and men to support the resistance against the German invasion, and refugees from there over to Scotland during the second world war. Lunna House was effectively the control centre.

Close by stands Lunna Kirk, the oldest building in use for Christian Worship in Shetland (extra photo) where some of the Norwegian sailors are buried. There is also a memorial plaque dedicated to David Howarth, the organiser, who wrote the history of the Shetland Bus, and whose ashes are spread over the area.

We are now ensconced in our AirBnb, a converted croft house in the middle of nowhere on the island of Unst.
