Emergency Repairs
My morning ablutions were dramatically interrupted by Sophie hammering on the bathroom door and yelling that the house opposite had flames coming out of it.
She had heard a loud bang while getting dressed and looked out her bedroom window to see flames shooting out of the wall. Fortunately they were short lived: it seems that a fault in an old electrical junction box had caused the explosion and fire.
By the time I got there, Tess was checking that the neighbours were OK, which they were apart from having no power.
Anyway, as we got back from dropping Sophie at school we followed this fleet of vans down the road and they have been there all day. There must have been 4 or 5 workmen who spent the morning inspecting the damage and then apparently waiting for reinforcements with the necessary equipment to turn up. This afternoon this chap removed the damaged box and fixed up some new wires while the rest dug a hole in the ground.
Presumably they’ll be back tomorrow to do something in it or to it. One way and another it took a lot of people a lot of time to do not very much but it provided a bit of interest on an otherwise mundane day, mostly spent in the garden.
