Under the Eaves
A record shot, really - a Red Underwing resting under our eaves. We get them most years, usually earlier, but didn't spot any last year. The moths are some 4 to 5 cm from front to back when resting like this. The caterpillars feed on willow or poplar, & we have plenty of both, so we like to think that they're "ours" - though we can't claim to have a breeding population!!
There was a second adult lower down on the wall, sadly badly damaged, presumably by a bird. I've included it as an extra as it shows the how the moth got its name.
