Coffee break mit Zeitung

To improve my atrocious German, I like to sit for an hour or so reading the paper in a café. Some of the cafés stock the newspapers; sometimes I have to bring my own. What confuses the café proprietors is how I can read a newspaper in German when I can barely order coffee properly. Of course, I am not really reading, just deciphering sentences here and there — and it helps if I already know what the article is about.
