Hoard

A day in Edinburgh. There were two exhibitions I wanted to see at the National Museum of Scotland (one of which ends on Sunday) and two at the National Portrait Gallery.

The Blip is of Viking-age brooches that form part of the Galloway Hoard. The Galloway Hoard is the richest collection of Viking-age artefacts ever found in the UK and Ireland. Buried around 900AD and discovered by a metal detectorist in 2014 the items are currently in the care of the National Museums of Scotland. Not only are there silver ingots and gold jewellery from the lands around the Irish Sea, some of the collection appears to have originated in the Middle East and Asia, where the Vikings also reached on their travels.
