Slate

Luing and its surrounding islands are known as the Slate Islands. There's a lot of it about, with shiny pieces of pyrite embedded in it, like little bits of gold.

This last few days there has been a series of meetings and debates about the possibility of opening the quarry on Luing again. It was not profitable in the 60s when it closed, but there is a group of people who think it would be a good source of employment and income for the islands now.

We've been doing our best to stay out of the way of film crews or recording microphones but we keep coming across them either up in the quarry or in the tiny roads in the village!

It's such a beautiful, unique place that the thought of it reopening is a bit worrying, but it's not for us to decide.
