Introducing Lucilia sericata
Goes by the every day name , common blow fly or green bottle..
Yet this much loathed fly can save your limbs if gangrene , diabetic ulcers or MRSA set in. In pre-antibiotic times they worked well .Now with over use of such drugs and ever increasing MRSA, maggots of these beauties are back and helping .
Specially bred they are sterilised in little bags which are placed on the wound .They do not eat good cells , only very infected tissue .The result ....a clean wound and a limb saved.
I'm not their PR but these facts are not known to many .
After my experience with MRSA I'd opt for maggots any day .
Thank goodness I bought the book 'The secret life of flies '
