West Riding Of Yorkshire

This coat of arms is located on the gatehouse at the approach to Wetherby - actually close to the roundabout that is now where ‘Wetherby Turnpike’ used to be … those of you of 'retirement age' or more may remember the interminable queues at this roundabout on the Great North Road….long before the current A1(M) section was built.

Historically, Yorkshire (being such a large county), was split into three ridings, North, East and West. The name Riding is of Viking origin and derives from Threthingr (equivalent to third-ing)!!

I was having a wander around Wetherby this morning and stopped to photograph this. It looks like it may need a bit of restoration work!

Not much else getting done today…tired after yesterday’s trip to Sheffield….sadly I didn’t get to the reservoir as planned - but, as there was no real colourful sunset, it wasn’t a big loss. We didn’t get home until almost 11 p.m. - and I did manage the driving - about 45 miles each way! Things are looking up….
