Look who's drinking from our pond!
I was sitting with my Mother in her garden this sunny afternoon, when we noticed a steady stream of spectacular insects visiting her pond, to drink. On closer inspection I realised they were European Hornets (Vespa crabro), and fortunately not the Asiatic species. There are big oak and ash trees in her garden and around, and I guess they have a nest in one nearby, as they all came and returned in the same direction. They are nearly 30mm long, so really very striking!
I blipped a Hover Fly last month which masquerades as a hornet, but which I don't think is nearly as beautiful as the real thing.
