Don’t Upset the Apple Cart

Went to the Marldon  apple pie fair  today which is held in a nearby village.
The Fair dates back to the 19th century. During the Apple season George Hill used to travel weekly to the Saint Marychurch market on his donkey with panniers full of apples and bring back washing to be laundered  by his wife .Legend has it that it was the donkey that led George home rather than the other way around. George drove a cart containing a huge pie to the annual fair in Saint Marychurch. The pie was oval in shape and the size of a kitchen table and it ended its journey at the fair and was eaten with cream. Marldon had its annual show and sports every September from 1888 and the Marldon Apple Pie was a feature of the fair until George  died. It was baked at the Royal Oak and was drawn in procession  behind a band. It was revived in 1958 as a way of raising funds for the Village Hall. All profits from the fair are used by Marldon Village Hall council to provide funding towards new and improved facilities. A great day out and a good pie. This is probably not the original cart.
