This Is A Souvenir
"It pains me we live in a world that's never heard of Spearmint" ~ 500 Days Of Summer.
These immortal words were spoken by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the film 500 Days Of Summer, and it's a phrase anyone who loves the music of Spearmint will totally agree with.
A band who have managed to spend their entire musical career, well under the radar. But have also managed to produce 7 albums, so far, of timeless, joyfull pop music.
When they first arrived on the scene with debut album 'A WEEK AWAY', their music took you to a place where it felt you were listening to a band who had Kevin Rowland of Dexy's Midnight Runners fronting the best Northern Soul group in the land.
Singer Shirlwy Lee manages to pack amazing, life affirming stories into 3 minutes of pop heaven.
Even on their most recent album 'PARIS IN A BOTTLE' they are still delivering the freshest pop sounds around, like the criminally catchy 'WHAT IS WRONG WITH BREAKING UP ANYWAY' that most bands around right now would kill to have written.
I found this quirky little book on amazon, titled 'THIS IS A SOUVENIR - THE SONGS OF SPEARMINT & SHIRLEY LEE' which is in comic book form and has some of the most unique voices in comics today picking a song from the SPEARMINT catalogue and re-interpreting them and bringing them even more colourfully alive in comic strip stories.
I've yet to read this book as im saving it for a warm summers day, where i can sit outside, with a playlist of their songs blasting out, and, like the title of one of their many great songs and think....'Isnt It Great To Be Alive'.
