Female Scarce vapourer
My Scarce vapourers are now eclosing from their pupae. I am keeping the male separate from the females as I don't want them to mate if at all possible ( though I have a horrible feeling I may have missed one male). Partly because they are related and it narrows the gene pool, but mostly because they are a rare species in the UK, extinct in West Sussex and I would be unable to release the larvae.
This is a flightless female, she would typically eclose, then sit on her cocoon and wait for a male to arrive and mate with her, before laying her batch of eggs on the cocoon,
I do think she is rather sweet.
