Day trip to Rotterdam anyone?
Opened in 1886, the Gravesend West railway station served services between London and Kent, with an extension onto this pier to connect with ferries and boats across the Thames and beyond. During WWI, in 1916, a Dutch company, the Dutch Batavia Line, introduced a steamer service from the West Street Pier to Rotterdam, and a "Continental Express" boat train service from London Victoria was laid on to connect with the steamers, with signs in Dutch appearing at some intermediate stations". Services declined after WWII, and eventually the route was withdrawn in the late 1960s. The station itself was demolished in 1991, with the remaining section of viaduct and bridge over West Street going in 2006. This pier, in some state of dereliction, is now all that remains.
