Roobarb and Custard

Does anyone remember the cartoon on BBC and the ABC back in the 70s and 80s? They were the creation of our friend Grange who passed away last Sunday. He was a very funny man and spending time with him was a bit like being in the cartoon with his dog Roobarb ( their real family pet) and neighbour’s cat Custard. Today we spent time at a small family memorial. Due to Covid we were allowed 10 people at a funeral or memorial. Grange’s two sons and their wives and four grandchildren, plus Bob and me. Our daughter is married to his son, so we share the grandchildren and due to family connections became quite close to him over the past ten years. Porridge, his dog, came with us and she had a wonderful time with her ten favourite people to spoil her.

We sat outside ( in the freezing cold ) with masks on. A bizarre experience but fitting in the circumstances. Speeches were made by some and a link up to Grange’s nephew in LA. As we are all in lockdown it was the only chance to see the family. A proper memorial will be repeated to include his many friends from around the world - when Covid permits.
