Song of the Union - Burns Monument
We took in a few of the exhibits in the Edinburgh Art Festival. Emeka Ogboh's "Song of the Union" sound installation is so simple in concept and yet so clever and wonderfully moving. It's his response to the UK's departure from the EU. On the 29 January 2020 after voting on the final withdrawal agreement all 751 MEPs rose and sang the Burns song 'Auld Lang Syne'. 12 days later, Ogboh stood in the Burns Monument on Regent Road, recalled that day and wanted to memorialise it. The sound installation has voices from each nation state of the EU singing 'Auld Lang Syne' in their mother tongue although the singers all live in Scotland. Go - it's powerful and emotional.
