On the brink
This young swallow landed on my bedroom window and sat there a while, chirping. It's one the first brood that has left the nest and started living independently, feeding up to ready itself for the journey that lies ahead. Some time soon it will launch itself on the long flight to southern Africa, a place it has never been. Instinct, and luck, will take it there and next spring it may return to Pembrokeshire. Meanwhile its parents are busy raising their second brood up in the barn roof.
In other news I picked a pound of blackberries which became, along with some windfall apples, the first crumble of the autumn late summer.
The year turns.
