Step up Bairns

The imposing cast iron drinking fountain which stands in the Square in Tomintoul looks quite incongruous in what is a typically austere Morayshire village- said by some to be the highest village in the Highlands.

The fountain was donated by Dr Robert Grant, a native of the village in 1915. It is almost 4 metres high and was made by the Lion Foundry.

The classicaly draped figure holds an olive branch in her left hand and uses her right hand to balance an urn on her head.

The two cast iron stools on the base enabled children to reach the drinking fountain basins and are inscribed 'Step up bairns'.
