The dropped stitch

Sule Skerry Lighthouse Station

I've walked past this building a number of times this week and wondered about its history.

Dated 1892, it was built for the families of Sule Skerry lighthouse keepers. The lighthouse, 40 miles west of Orkney and 35 miles north of mainland Scotland, held the record for being the most remote manned lighthouse in Britain.
Landings on the island could be hazardous, especially in bad weather, so the families of the lighthouse keepers lived at this shore station in Stromness.
The lighthouse was automated in 1982 and now the building is private flats.

I was glad the drizzle stopped this afternoon. It was pleasant being out and about, even if the sky was a bit grey.

I have come across many friendly folk in Stromness but to be greeted by my blip name took me by surprise for a moment..... Then it dawned on me - it was  fellow blipper EllyJay.  :-)
