Human assisted nesting area

The lake is used for storage of silt from dredging. The silt itself is contaminated, but the water is mostly clean. However, apart from being useful for us humans, birds like the place too, for foraging and nesting. To prevent nests from drowning due to the fluctuation in the water level, an artificial island was created, seen here in the foreground. Now dozens of common terns nest here each year.

Nature right inside one of the busiest port areas in the world.
