Chichester, West Sussex

The statue is of Admiral Horatio Nelson and Admiral George Murray by sculptor Vincent Gray.

The words “Murray or none” is quoted by Nelson when he wanted Murray to be Captain of the Fleet at the battle of Trafalgar. Murray couldn’t join Nelson as he had commitments at home being the executor of his Father-in-laws will. Nelson would not appoint another man hence the quoted words.

Murray was born in Chichester and died there in 1819. He built a house which is now The Ship Inn. He was Mayor of Chichester in 1815. He and his wife Anne are buried in Chichester cathedral.
