Looking under rocks...
When I was a child we used to lift up stones and look under them to find crawling creatures that quickly crept away, hiding from our curious eyes. By the sea it would be tiny amphipoda (scuds) or spiders and small insects like lice inland. We were always mesmerized by our findings.
I was walking my usual path by the river, camera around the neck looking around to spot insects but didn't find any that caught my attention. Then I decided to slow the pace, kneel down and look better, scanning the plants around me for something unusual. I noticed a fly in a strange position (extra). When I moved the small scabious flower I got the same mesmerizing feeling I'd got when looking under rocks as a child. On the underside of the flower there was so much going on. A crab spider giving the kiss of death, two shieldbugs mating and, too quick for my camera, a small black spider that hid between the florets.
