Trees in Kansas are mostly short bushy things that work to conserve water, stay out of the wind, and scatter limbs to keep more leaves in the sun.  Therefore using wooden posts to hold up barbed wire was a foolish use of a valuable commodity.
     There's plenty of sandstone that's easy to cut and doesn't cost anything but the effort and time to shape it to your need.  And it lasts forever!
