The Elephant Says ”Why Not Now?”

Another trip into town today for the second elephant in the cultural quarter. This one was tricky to capture as it is black and white on one side and colourful on the other.

The Elephant Says ”Why Not Now?” is by 2006 Turner Prize nominee Mark Titchner. It was inspired by a photograph of women making camouflage netting at the ground of Luton Town Football Club during World War ll.  “I enjoyed the slightly ridiculous idea of camouflaging an elephant and I thought in turn of how during the First and Second World Wars battleships had been painted with ‘dazzle‘ patterns to conceal them from enemy bombers. The dazzle pattern for my design is based on a flowing interpretation of the words ‘Why not now?‘ and this message is also hidden upon the elephant”.

Part of the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the local hospice, as well as a fundraiser for them.

This one is described here.

The hospice is here.
