Ramblings from Zambia....

crossing the river

Today I am on my way to Karonga about three hours drive north of Mzuzu with three colleagues for a meeting tomorrow. On the way we decided to stop at Kandewe traditional basket bridge which crosses the South Rukuru river. It is made of bamboo and does not look terribly safe - reminds me of the Carrick-a-rede rope bridge in Ireland on a smaller scale!

After the heavy rains we have had though there is fierce brown fast running water below this construction and it really is the safest way for the villagers to cross the river. It has been taken over by a community project for income generation in the village, so when visitors come they charge a small fee (its K500 which is about 80 pence these days).

I took a few photos but decided to use this one where you can see the two small boys crossing (if you look closely). Not for the faint hearted!!

Hopefully tomorrow I may have a blip of Lake Malawi if the weather suits!
