What's cooking?
This is the view as one steps out of Sainsbury’s in Carlisle. There is the iconic Dixon’s chimney, but what strikes one most is not what one sees, but what one smells - biscuits! The grey building on the right is part of McVities (used to be Carrs) and there is always a strong smell of biscuits outside. People say they can tell what kind of biscuit is being cooked, but I am not sure about that. This is where the famous Carr’s Water Biscuits are made and people might remember that, when this area was flooded a few years ago, there was a worrying shortage of Water Biscuits.
This area was where the Carlisle Canal was and here would have been full of activity - lots of warehouses and ships. Interesting that the canal was built to make it easier for the flour/biscuit industry to import and export goods. It was also built for the cotton industry, which I mentioned last week, to have better access to the sea for trading. Dixon’s Chimney, which was part of a huge cotton mill, would have been here at the time of the canal. Sainsbury's wasn't!!
