Life through the lens...

Cup and Saucer Stone.

These stones, by the pond on Bierley Marsh, are older than1379 but postdate the Norman Conquest. Their origin and original purpose is unknown. One theory is that they are a monument erected in the mid 14th century, by the Lord if the Manor Sir Brian de Thornhill in memory of his servant Adam de Soureby who was fatally injured near this spot after being kicked by his master’s horse in 1347.
Another claims resemblance to Bradford’s old Market Cross. The top stone reputedly had a cross on top, and a very old house nearby, dating from 1622, is called Cross House.
Whatever the origin it has been used by locals as a meeting point and a location for religious services.

I thought this would make a suitable blip for Wide Wednesday, with a challenge of “ History”.
Many thanks to RockArea for hosting.
