Tui were everywhere; Lockdown 3 Day 1
New Zealand is in a nationwide full lockdown from midnight last night; a minimum of seven days for Auckland, and three days for the rest of the country. As expected the labs confirmed overnight that the newly diagnosed community case has the Delta variant; the trackers are closing on the transmission pathway (we hope).
Unfortunately one of the close contacts of the new case, and has tested positive, is a teacher at Avondale College where daughter C is a teacher, and our grandsons are students there. It is a big school (over 3,000 pupils) and all are to have swabs and self isolate. Contacts of them (which includes J, S and me) are not required to have a test unless symptomatic (or they test positive), but are to stay at home unless exercising safely. We will have to order food deliveries. Before I knew that, I had gone to the supermarket so we should be okay for quite a while.
I commend our Government on moving so quickly to protect the vulnerable. The moneyed, who often oppose lockdowns, are secure in their castles, akin to the way that the European aristocracy avoided the brunt of the plague which laid waste to the peasants and city poor.
I am currently still on leave, and will work from home when I return to work until we are back to level 2.
The photo of a tui which had been feeding in this tree, was taken while on an approved run locally.
