Healthy snail population!
A sure sign that your snail population is healthy and growing is the appearance of the Limpkin in your neighborhood. The birds are cool… Maybe not so much the Apple snail switch depending on who I read are either super bad and invasive or only a little bad and invasive!
In the extras is a collage including the top picture which includes all three of the birds from the individual photos below. A limpkin on the fence, an anhinga in the tree on the far right and a great egret moseying along on the left. They are all hanging around three or four extra feet of water dumped by heavy rains over the past couple of weeks. Fortunately this natural basin collects much of it. The rest of the community enjoys flood protection from a series of interconnected retention ponds that are used to provide reclaimed water for irrigation for homes and golf courses but can be raised and lowered as needed to protect flood prone areas.
