In the old days
The manoeuvring stand in the late fifties with chief- and second engineer, waiting for the command from the wheelhouse. The second engineer accepts the demand by putting the handle in the position that is pointed by the indicator, the chief will then start the engine according to the command.
He is hanging against a bar that is fitted after the first trip in bad weather because he could not remain in standing position due to the wild moves of the ship....
